For years I’ve been fascinated by the way we talk about God.
And it’s not just the words we use. Architecture, music, art, theater, and film can all point to the divine if we let them.
That’s because Catholics see the world differently. Each good, true, or beautiful thing we experience is an encounter with God just waiting to happen. Anticipating and appreciating these moments calls for a Catholic imagination.
When we look at our lives this way, our souls usually respond with wonder and awe.
“The world is charged with the grandeur of God.”
—Gerard Manley Hopkins, S.J.
I’m Catherine, a cradle Catholic, story lover, deep thinker, and former teacher.
Even though I’ve left the classroom, I still have more to say. More importantly, I know I still have more to learn.
My years as a religion and English teacher showed me that learning is way more fun with friends. There’s something magical about creating a community out of a group of strangers. I also know I’m motivated to work harder and think clearer when I have a captive audience to laugh at my bad jokes and listen to my thoughts on books and faith.
So, when you subscribe to Wonder & Awe, I’ll send you a monthly essay about where I’ve found God in words, images, sounds, and spaces. This is a place where I’ll share the things I loved to teach and the things I wish I could have added to the curriculum.
You won’t find any quick hot takes here. My brain is a slow cooker, not a microwave. Some of these essays have been years in the making.
I hope you’ll join me.
Wonder & Awe is for you if…
you appreciate a good book recommendation or a deep-ish dive into theology.
you know beauty stirs your spirit.
you are seeking God in new places.
you are interested in what I’ve been reading and writing recently.
